The Center for Creative Photography published its first scholarly journal in March 1976, only a few months after the institution itself was born. Initially called Center for Creative Photography, it developed and expanded along with the staff, collection, and even the structure of the Center. Over the years the journal continued to present previously unpublished or unique material from the collections and archives of the Center. This focus was enriched with scholarly commentary by noted photo historians, critics, artists, curators, and others. The title of the journal changed to The Archive in December 1981. By 1991, it had become more monographic in appearance and content. The publication of Index 1976-1994 honors the Center's twentieth anniversary and is the first comprehensive, cumulative index of Center for Creative Photography and The Archive (through Volume 32 only) to be published.
