More than 30 years ago, the residents of Jonesborough pulled a wagon into Courthouse Square and played host to the first National Storytelling Festival. That simple event sparked a revival of appreciation for storytelling that has swept across the globe.
In 1975, the National Association for the Preservation and Perpetuation of Storytelling (NAPPS) was formed to produce the festival. Over the years, the name was changed to reflect the expanding focus of the organization.
The International Storytelling Center, the only facility anywhere in the world devoted exclusively to storytelling, serves as the home for and a tribute to the world's storytelling renaissance.
